History of Cancun International Airport
Cancun Airport was built in 1942 mainly to boost the flourishing chewing gum industry in the region.
A part of the airport’s history was speculated that the runway was used to bring smuggled goods into Quintana Roo during this period. This led to the closure of the landing field for many years until 1970.
Infratur, now called Fonatur, a financing company, came up with the idea of making Cancun a primary tourist destination.
The old runway was cleaned out, and the renovation started for the new Cancun Airport.
On February 5, 1973, a Douglas DC-6 Mexican commercial aircraft landed at the old airport during the renovation despite a prohibition for planes landing in the area.
The new Cancun International Airport opened in 1974, and the first commercial flight landed on May 12, 1975.
Cancun’s currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN, MEX$, $). Although the US and Mexico use the same money symbol they vary in monetary value.
